Nicknamed "America's First Resort", Newport Rhode Island is located at the southern end of Aquidneck Island on Narragansett Bay, and approximately 30 miles south of the capital, Providence. The Newport Bridge, the longest suspension bridge in New England, connects Newport to Conanicut Island across the eastern passage of Narragansett Bay. Newport may be best known for the mansions ("summer cottages") built at the end of the 19th century by America's high society. Vast estates along famed Bellevue Avenue are among the most popular tourist attractions for visitors to Newport.
Another sport associated with Newport is tennis; the International Tennis Hall of Fame is located in the city. Newport has a relatively temperate climate, with warm summers and cold winters. The fall foliage season begins in mid-September and lasts through November. Rain falls evenly throughout the year. Measurable snowfall begins in December and typically lasts through March. Hurricanes are rare, but are not unknown to strike the southern edge of New England, including Newport.
